West Coast Swing
West Coast Swing is a social partner dance with roots in the swing family and music that can move from blues to contemporary pop, R&B, funk, and beyond. It gives partners a shared structure, then leaves room for improvisation, musical choices, and the responsive connection that makes each dance feel like a conversation.
What it feels like
Two dancers share clear roles while still leaving room for individual style and conversation.
The dance usually travels along a slot, so the shape is easy to recognize even when the music changes.
Connection is responsive rather than rigid: partners stretch, release, and redirect energy together.
Useful terms
- Jack & Jill
- A competition format where partners are assigned at random and dance to music they do not choose, so improvisation is the point.
- Leader / Follower
- The two partner roles in the dance. They describe responsibilities in the conversation, not gender.
- Slot
- The shared line of travel that gives West Coast Swing its long, elastic look.
- Connection
- The physical and musical communication partners use to move together, create stretch, and respond to each other.
